P0206 Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit Malfunction

P0206 is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code that indicates the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormal electrical condition in the fuel injector circuit assigned to cylinder 6.

The injector is responsible for delivering a precisely controlled amount of fuel into the engine. The ECM controls this injector electronically and continuously monitors the circuit to make sure the electrical response matches what it expects.

When that response is incorrect, the ECM can store P0206 and illuminate the Check Engine Light.

Despite the wording of the code, P0206 does not prove that the cylinder 6 injector itself is defective. The problem can also be somewhere in the wiring, connector, shared power supply, or injector driver inside the ECM.

What P0206 Is Really Telling You

Think of the injector circuit as a complete electrical path rather than a single component.

The ECM sends a control command to the injector, the injector responds electrically, and the ECM monitors that response.

Depending on the vehicle, the circuit may involve:

  • Cylinder 6 fuel injector

  • Injector connector

  • Injector power supply

  • Injector control wire

  • Engine wiring harness

  • Shared injector power circuit

  • Fuses or relays

  • ECM/PCM injector driver

  • Engine and module grounds

If something in this path behaves abnormally, P0206 may be stored.

The word “malfunction” is important because P0206 is a general injector-circuit code. It does not specify whether the circuit is definitely open, shorted low, shorted high, or experiencing an intermittent condition.

Where Is Cylinder 6?

Before diagnosing the injector, the correct cylinder must be identified.

Cylinder numbering is determined by the engine manufacturer. This becomes particularly important on V6, V8, V10, and V12 engines because cylinder numbering between the two banks is not universal.

Therefore, cylinder 6 should not simply be assumed to be a particular injector based on its physical position.

The correct cylinder numbering and injector location should be confirmed using the vehicle's service information.

What Can Cause P0206?

There are several possible causes, and they should be considered in a logical order.

A defective cylinder 6 injector

The injector can develop an internal electrical fault. The internal winding or electronic element may become open, shorted, or otherwise electrically abnormal.

An injector can also become mechanically stuck or restricted, although a purely mechanical problem does not necessarily produce a circuit malfunction code.

Damaged wiring

Injector wiring is exposed to engine heat, vibration, moisture, oil, and repeated movement.

A wire can break internally while its insulation remains intact. In other cases, the insulation can rub through and allow the conductor to contact ground or another circuit.

Poor electrical connection

A loose or damaged connector can cause P0206, particularly when the problem is intermittent.

Common connector problems include:

  • Corroded terminals

  • Loose terminals

  • Bent pins

  • Terminals pushed backward

  • Damaged locking tabs

  • Water contamination

  • Oil contamination

Open circuit

A broken wire, disconnected connector, damaged terminal, or internally open injector can interrupt the circuit.

Short circuit

The injector control circuit may be shorted to ground, battery voltage, another injector circuit, or another electrical circuit, depending on the vehicle's wiring architecture.

Shared injector power problem

Some engines supply power to several injectors through a common circuit.

If that supply is interrupted, multiple injector codes may appear.

ECM injector driver failure

The ECM contains electronic circuitry that controls the injector.

A damaged injector driver can cause P0206, but this should generally be considered after the injector and wiring have been tested.

Symptoms Associated With P0206

The symptoms depend on what has happened to the injector circuit.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Rough idle

  • Engine vibration

  • Misfire

  • Hesitation

  • Poor acceleration

  • Reduced engine power

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Difficult starting

  • Engine stalling

  • Limp mode

  • Unstable engine operation

  • Increased emissions

If cylinder 6 receives no fuel because its injector is electrically disabled, the engine may effectively be operating with one cylinder contributing little or nothing to combustion.

The result can be especially noticeable on smaller engines or under acceleration.

Why the Engine May Misfire

Fuel injection is closely tied to combustion.

If the cylinder 6 injector does not open when commanded, the cylinder may receive insufficient fuel. Combustion can become weak or fail completely.

If the injector remains open longer than intended, too much fuel may enter the cylinder, creating an excessively rich condition.

Either situation can cause unstable combustion.

This is why P0206 can appear together with a cylinder-specific misfire code.

However, the two codes describe different observations.

P0206 concerns the injector's electrical control circuit.

A cylinder 6 misfire code concerns the combustion result.

A misfire can therefore be caused by P0206, but not every cylinder 6 misfire means P0206 is present.

A Useful First Clue: Is It Only Cylinder 6?

The number of injector codes stored can provide an important diagnostic direction.

If P0206 is the only injector circuit code, attention naturally turns toward the cylinder 6 injector, its connector, its individual wiring, and its control circuit.

If several injector circuit codes appear at the same time, a shared electrical problem becomes much more interesting.

For example, multiple injectors can be affected by:

  • Common power supply

  • Fuse

  • Relay

  • Shared wiring

  • Ground problem

  • Harness damage

  • ECM power supply problem

This does not prove the cause, but it can prevent unnecessary replacement of several injectors.

How to Diagnose P0206 Properly

A professional diagnosis should begin with the electrical circuit rather than immediately replacing the injector.

1. Scan the entire vehicle

Record all stored and pending codes.

Look for other injector, fuel-pressure, misfire, power-supply, or communication codes.

The combination of codes can often tell more than P0206 by itself.

2. Examine the freeze-frame data

Freeze-frame information shows the operating conditions when the ECM recognized the problem.

Useful information can include:

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine load

  • Coolant temperature

  • Vehicle speed

  • Battery voltage

  • Fuel-system status

If the code repeatedly appears during acceleration, at high engine temperature, or after vibration begins, those circumstances can help identify an intermittent electrical problem.

3. Inspect the cylinder 6 connector

Disconnect and inspect the injector connector according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Look carefully for damaged terminals, corrosion, contamination, loose connections, or wiring pulled directly behind the connector.

A connector that looks fine from outside can still have poor terminal contact.

4. Trace the harness

Follow the injector wiring away from the injector.

Look for:

  • Melted insulation

  • Chafing

  • Pinched wires

  • Previous repairs

  • Broken conductors

  • Oil contamination

  • Contact with exhaust components

  • Excessive tension

  • Harness sections damaged by engine movement

A visual inspection is particularly important because injector wiring operates in a harsh environment.

Testing the Injector

The injector should be tested according to the specifications for that particular engine.

On some conventional gasoline injectors, resistance measurements can provide useful information.

However, resistance alone is not a universal diagnostic method.

Different systems use different injector technologies, including:

  • Port fuel injectors

  • Gasoline direct injectors

  • Diesel common-rail injectors

  • Other electronically controlled injection systems

Their electrical characteristics can differ substantially.

For this reason, there is no universal injector resistance or voltage value that should be applied to every vehicle.

Comparing Cylinder 6 With Another Cylinder

Comparison testing can sometimes make the diagnosis much easier.

If the engine design permits it, the cylinder 6 injector may be compared electrically with another injector of the same type.

On some vehicles, a technician may also swap injectors between cylinders as a diagnostic test.

If the fault follows the injector, suspicion of the injector becomes much stronger.

For example, if a problem originally associated with cylinder 6 appears on another cylinder after an appropriate injector swap, the injector itself becomes a strong suspect.

However, this procedure is not suitable for every fuel system.

Some injectors require:

  • Coding

  • Calibration

  • Flow classification

  • New seals

  • Special installation procedures

Diesel common-rail and gasoline direct-injection systems also require additional precautions because of high fuel pressure.

Checking the Electrical Control Signal

If the injector itself appears to be within specification, the next question is whether the ECM can actually control it correctly.

A technician may use an oscilloscope or appropriate current-measuring equipment to observe the injector circuit while the engine is operating.

This can reveal problems that a basic continuity test cannot.

For example, a wire can show continuity when the engine is off but lose electrical contact when the harness moves or becomes hot.

An intermittent fault may therefore require testing while reproducing the conditions under which P0206 occurs.

Why a Continuity Test Alone Isn't Enough

A continuity test is useful, but it does not prove that an injector circuit is healthy under operating conditions.

A damaged wire might still show continuity with a multimeter while carrying little or unstable current under load.

Similarly, a connector may make contact when stationary but lose contact because of vibration.

For difficult P0206 cases, checking the actual control waveform and current behavior can provide much more useful information.

Don't Confuse Injector Circuit Fault With Fuel Pressure

P0206 is fundamentally an electrical/control circuit code.

Low fuel pressure can cause poor engine performance and misfires, but it does not automatically explain an injector circuit malfunction.

Fuel pressure should nevertheless be checked if there are additional symptoms or codes indicating a fuel-delivery problem.

This distinction becomes particularly important on direct-injection gasoline and diesel common-rail systems, where fuel pressure and injector electrical control are separate diagnostic areas.

Could the ECM Be Faulty?

It is possible, but the ECM should not be blamed simply because the injector and wiring have not yet produced an obvious answer.

Before considering an ECM injector driver failure, the technician should verify:

  • Injector condition

  • Connector integrity

  • Wiring continuity

  • Wiring isolation from shorts

  • Injector power supply

  • Control circuit behavior

  • ECM power and grounds

  • Commanded injector operation

If everything outside the ECM is confirmed to be correct and the ECM output is abnormal, the injector driver becomes a reasonable suspect.

ECM replacement can be expensive and may require programming, configuration, immobilizer synchronization, or other procedures.

P0206 and Other Cylinder 6 Codes

Several different DTCs can refer to cylinder 6, but they do not necessarily describe the same fault.

P0206 – Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit Malfunction

This points toward an abnormal electrical/control condition involving the cylinder 6 injector circuit.

Cylinder 6 Misfire Code

This indicates that the ECM has detected a combustion problem in cylinder 6.

Cylinder 6 Contribution/Balance Code

This indicates that the cylinder's contribution to engine operation is outside the expected range.

The same injector problem can potentially produce all of these symptoms and codes, but the diagnostic meaning of each code is different.

Gasoline and Diesel Applications

The basic meaning of P0206 remains the same across applicable vehicles, but the diagnostic procedure depends heavily on the injection system.

On a conventional gasoline engine, the injector is usually a relatively simple electronically controlled solenoid.

Gasoline direct injection uses different injector technology and higher fuel pressures.

Diesel common-rail systems use highly sophisticated injectors and extremely high fuel pressures. Injector coding, correction values, and specialized testing may be required.

Consequently, a test procedure that is appropriate for a conventional port-injected gasoline engine should not automatically be applied to a modern diesel system.

Can You Continue Driving?

A vehicle with P0206 should not automatically be considered undriveable, but the engine's behavior matters.

If the Check Engine Light is steady and the engine is operating relatively normally, driving a short distance to a repair facility may sometimes be possible.

However, continued driving should be avoided if there is:

  • Severe engine shaking

  • Significant misfire

  • Flashing Check Engine Light

  • Major power loss

  • Strong fuel smell

  • Heavy smoke

  • Engine stalling

  • Abnormal engine noise

A severe misfire can send unburned fuel into the exhaust system and cause catalytic-converter damage.

An injector that is stuck open can create additional problems because excessive fuel can enter the cylinder.

Repairing P0206

There is no single repair for this code.

Depending on the diagnosis, the solution may involve:

  • Replacing the cylinder 6 injector

  • Repairing injector wiring

  • Replacing a damaged connector

  • Repairing loose or corroded terminals

  • Restoring injector power supply

  • Repairing a short circuit

  • Repairing an open circuit

  • Correcting a shared injector power problem

  • Repairing the ECM injector driver

  • Programming or coding a replacement injector when required

After the repair, the stored code should be cleared and the vehicle tested.

The technician should confirm that the injector is operating correctly and that P0206 does not return under the conditions that originally triggered it.

The Most Important Diagnostic Lesson

P0206 should be approached as a circuit diagnosis, not simply an injector replacement instruction.

The ECM has detected an abnormal electrical response from the cylinder 6 injector circuit. The actual cause could be the injector, but it could just as easily be a connector, broken wire, short circuit, shared power supply, or—in less common cases—the ECM itself.

A careful diagnosis therefore follows the circuit from the injector to the control module, verifies power and control signals, and uses comparison or waveform testing when necessary.

That approach is much more reliable than replacing the injector based solely on the presence of P0206.
