What to Do If You Are Not Going to Use Your Car for a Long Time
Leaving a car parked for a few days is usually not a problem. However, when a vehicle sits unused for several weeks or months, problems can begin to develop. The battery can discharge, tires can develop flat spots, fluids can deteriorate, brakes can corrode, and fuel can lose some of its quality.
If you know that you will not be driving your car for an extended period, a little preparation can prevent many problems when you return. The ideal preparation depends on how long the vehicle will remain parked, but the following measures are useful for most cars.
Clean the Car Before Parking It
Washing the exterior before long-term storage may seem unnecessary, but dirt, road salt, bird droppings, insects, and other contaminants can damage the paint if they remain on the vehicle for a long time.
Pay particular attention to areas where mud and road grime accumulate, such as the wheel arches, lower doors, and underside of the vehicle.
After washing the car, allow it to dry completely. Leaving moisture trapped around the body or seals can encourage corrosion and unpleasant odors.
It is also a good idea to clean the interior. Remove food, drinks, trash, and other organic materials that could attract insects or rodents.
Fill the Fuel Tank
If your car will remain unused for several weeks or months, keeping the fuel tank relatively full can be beneficial.
A full tank leaves less empty space inside the tank, which reduces the amount of moisture that can accumulate through condensation. This is particularly useful when the vehicle is being stored in an environment where temperature changes are significant.
For very long storage periods, fuel stabilizer may also be considered, particularly for gasoline-powered vehicles. If you use a fuel stabilizer, follow the product instructions and allow the treated fuel to circulate through the fuel system before parking the vehicle.
Do not simply add a fuel additive and immediately shut the engine off unless the product instructions specifically allow it.
Take Care of the Battery
The battery is one of the components most likely to cause trouble when a vehicle sits unused.
Even when the engine is switched off, modern vehicles continue to consume a small amount of electrical power. Security systems, alarm systems, keyless-entry modules, memory functions, and various electronic control units can continue drawing power.
After several weeks, this small electrical load can discharge the battery enough to prevent the engine from starting.
For longer storage periods, a battery maintainer or intelligent trickle charger is one of the best solutions. It keeps the battery at an appropriate charge level without continuously overcharging it.
If a suitable power source is not available, disconnecting the negative battery terminal may reduce parasitic drain. However, this can reset certain vehicle settings and may affect alarm systems, electric windows, infotainment settings, or other electronic functions. Some vehicles may also require special procedures after the battery is disconnected.
For modern vehicles, check the manufacturer's recommendations before disconnecting the battery.
Check the Tire Pressures
Tires can lose pressure naturally while a vehicle is sitting. If the car remains parked for a long time, low tire pressure can increase the risk of tire deformation.
Before storing the vehicle, check all four tires and adjust their pressures according to the manufacturer's recommended values.
For very long-term storage, some owners slightly increase tire pressure within the manufacturer's permitted range. However, excessively inflating the tires is not recommended.
If the vehicle will remain stationary for several months, periodically moving it a short distance can also help prevent the tires from remaining in exactly the same position.
Protect Against Flat Spots
When a vehicle remains stationary for a long time, the section of the tire supporting the vehicle's weight can become temporarily flattened. This is known as a flat spot.
Modern tires are generally more resistant to permanent flat spotting than older tire designs, but prolonged storage can still produce vibration when the vehicle is driven again.
If possible, moving the vehicle occasionally and changing the position of the tires can reduce this risk.
For extremely long-term storage, some vehicles may be placed on appropriate vehicle stands. However, this should only be done using proper lifting points and suitable equipment. Never rely on an improvised support system.
Do Not Leave the Parking Brake Applied for Months
Leaving the parking brake engaged for a very long period can cause problems, particularly in humid environments.
Brake components can develop surface corrosion, and parking-brake mechanisms or cables can become difficult to release after extended periods.
This does not mean that you should simply leave the vehicle unsecured. The safest method depends on where the vehicle is parked and the manufacturer's recommendations.
If the car is stored on a level, secure surface, an appropriate wheel chock can sometimes be used instead of leaving the parking brake engaged for an extended storage period.
Automatic-transmission vehicles should be secured according to the manufacturer's instructions, and manual-transmission vehicles should also be left in an appropriate gear when required.
Protect the Brakes From Corrosion
Brake discs can develop a thin layer of surface rust surprisingly quickly when a vehicle is not driven.
This is usually not a serious problem. In normal driving, light surface rust is generally removed when the brake pads contact the discs.
However, if a vehicle sits unused for weeks or months, corrosion can become more significant, especially in humid or salty environments.
Before returning the vehicle to normal use, inspect the brake discs, pads, and other visible components. If the brakes produce unusual noises, the vehicle pulls to one side, or braking performance feels abnormal, have the braking system inspected.
Check the Engine Oil and Other Fluids
Long-term parking is also a good reason to check the vehicle's fluids.
Before storage, check the engine oil level and make sure it is within the manufacturer's recommended range. If the oil is already due for replacement, changing it before long-term storage can be preferable to leaving old, contaminated oil in the engine.

As a result, condensation can remain inside the engine and exhaust system. The battery may also not receive enough charging time to compensate for the energy used during starting.
If you are going to start the vehicle, it is generally more beneficial to drive it long enough for the engine, transmission, brakes, and exhaust system to reach normal operating temperatures.
If the vehicle cannot be driven safely or legally, leaving it shut down and properly preparing it for storage is often better than repeatedly running it for a few minutes.
Protect the Interior
Long periods without ventilation can cause unpleasant odors and moisture problems inside the cabin.
Make sure the interior is clean and completely dry before parking the vehicle. Remove wet clothing, floor mats, food, drinks, and anything else that could retain moisture.
Depending on the environment, moisture-absorbing products can help control humidity inside the cabin.
Do not completely seal the vehicle with materials that prevent normal ventilation unless the storage method specifically requires it. Excess moisture can create ideal conditions for mold and corrosion.
Take Measures Against Rodents
A parked vehicle can become an attractive shelter for mice, rats, and other small animals.
Rodents may build nests in the engine compartment, air intake system, cabin filter area, or other protected spaces. They can also chew electrical wiring, insulation, and hoses.
Before leaving the vehicle for an extended period, check the area around the parking location for signs of rodents.
Keeping the vehicle and storage area clean can help. In areas with a significant rodent problem, additional protective measures may be necessary.
It is also worth checking the engine compartment and surrounding areas before starting the vehicle after long-term storage.
Choose the Parking Location Carefully
Where you park the vehicle can be just as important as how you prepare it.
A dry, covered, and secure garage is generally preferable to leaving the vehicle exposed to rain, snow, intense sunlight, and extreme temperature changes.
If a garage is not available, use a high-quality breathable car cover designed for the environment. Avoid covering a dirty or wet vehicle, as trapped moisture and dirt can damage the paint.
The vehicle should also be parked away from trees if possible. Falling branches, tree sap, bird droppings, and other debris can create unnecessary problems.
Avoid Leaving the Car on a Wet Surface
Parking on wet grass or damp ground for a long period can increase exposure to moisture around the underside of the vehicle.
If possible, use a dry, solid surface such as a garage floor or paved driveway.
This is particularly important for older vehicles or cars already showing signs of corrosion.
Check the Vehicle Before Driving It Again
When you are ready to use the car after a long period of inactivity, do not simply get in and drive away.

A small amount of brake-disc surface rust may disappear after several normal braking cycles. However, persistent grinding, severe vibration, reduced braking performance, or a brake pedal that feels abnormal should not be ignored.
The same applies to the tires. If vibration remains after the vehicle has been driven for a while, the tires should be inspected.

There is no single maximum period that applies to every vehicle.
A healthy modern car can generally remain parked for a few days or even several weeks without major problems. Once the storage period extends into several months, however, preparation becomes increasingly important.
