Countries That Encourage the Use of Autogas Around the World

Autogas, or LPG used as a fuel for vehicles, is considered an alternative to gasoline and diesel in many countries around the world. However, the importance of LPG in the automotive sector varies considerably from one country to another.

In some countries, the main reason for the popularity of autogas is its lower fuel cost, while others actively support LPG through tax advantages, conversion incentives, or regulations aimed at commercial vehicles. Turkey, Russia, South Korea, Poland, and Italy are among the countries where autogas has a particularly strong presence.

Turkey

Turkey is one of the countries where autogas is most widely used.

One of the main reasons LPG has become so popular in Turkey is its long-standing price advantage over gasoline. This has been supported by a well-developed LPG conversion industry and a widespread network of autogas stations across the country.

An important characteristic of the Turkish market is that a large proportion of LPG vehicles are converted gasoline vehicles. Drivers do not necessarily need to purchase a factory-built LPG vehicle. A suitable gasoline vehicle can be equipped with an LPG system and operated as a dual-fuel vehicle.

This has made LPG accessible to a very large number of existing vehicle owners rather than limiting its use to buyers of new LPG-powered cars.

Turkey has therefore become one of the world's most important autogas markets.

Russia

Russia is another major autogas market.

Economic factors play an important role in the use of LPG as an automotive fuel. LPG can be particularly attractive for commercial vehicles and cars that cover high annual mileage because reducing fuel costs can have a significant effect on operating expenses.

South Korea

At certain periods, LPG accounted for more than 20 percent of automotive fuel consumption in Ukraine.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria is another European country where LPG has achieved widespread use.

Gasoline vehicles have frequently been converted to LPG because of the fuel's economic advantages and the availability of conversion services.

The development of the LPG market has also been supported by the availability of autogas stations and consumers' familiarity with LPG technology.

For many years, LPG represented a significant share of automotive fuel consumption in Bulgaria, making it one of Europe's notable autogas markets.

Japan

In Japan, LPG has traditionally been particularly important in the taxi sector.

Taxis cover high annual mileages, meaning fuel costs represent a significant operating expense. LPG can therefore provide an economic advantage for professional drivers and fleet operators.

The Japanese model differs from the Turkish one. While private passenger cars account for a large share of LPG use in Turkey, taxis and commercial vehicles have historically played a much more important role in Japan.

Thailand

United States

The United States provides a different example of how autogas can be used.

LPG is generally referred to as propane autogas in the United States. Unlike Turkey, where millions of private passenger cars use LPG, propane is more commonly used in fleets, school buses, public vehicles, and commercial transportation.

The main objectives are reducing fleet operating costs, improving fuel diversity, and lowering emissions.

This means that American autogas policies are generally more focused on fleet operators and commercial transportation than on individual passenger-car owners.

Why Do Governments Encourage Autogas?

Although LPG policies differ from country to country, governments generally support autogas for several common reasons.

Lower fuel costs are one of the biggest advantages. When LPG is significantly cheaper than gasoline, the cost of an LPG conversion can be recovered after a certain amount of driving.

Tax advantages can also make a major difference. If LPG is subject to a lower tax burden than gasoline or diesel, its price advantage becomes more significant for consumers.

Environmental considerations are another factor. LPG can offer advantages over gasoline and particularly diesel in terms of certain pollutants, which has made it part of alternative-fuel strategies in some countries.

The ability to convert existing vehicles is another important advantage. Unlike switching to an electric vehicle, LPG conversion does not require the vehicle itself to be replaced. A suitable gasoline-powered vehicle can continue to be used with a different fuel system.

The Role of Taxes in Autogas Adoption

The popularity of LPG in a country cannot be explained by the technical characteristics of the fuel alone.

The price difference between LPG and gasoline is extremely important. If LPG is only slightly cheaper, converting a vehicle may not make enough financial sense for the owner. If LPG has a significantly lower tax burden, however, the economic advantage becomes much more attractive.

For this reason, countries with strong autogas markets generally have several factors working together: competitive LPG prices, a well-developed refueling network, accessible conversion services, and policies that provide a stable economic advantage.

Which Countries Stand Out in Autogas Use?

Global autogas consumption is concentrated in a relatively small number of major markets.

Turkey, Russia, South Korea, Poland, and Italy are among the leading countries, while Ukraine, Bulgaria, Mexico, Thailand, China, and Japan also have significant LPG vehicle markets.

However, LPG is not used in the same way everywhere.

In Turkey and Poland, private passenger cars converted from gasoline to LPG are particularly important. In South Korea and Japan, taxis and commercial vehicles have traditionally played a much larger role. In the United States, fleet vehicles and school buses are among the most important applications.

Turkey's Position in the Global Autogas Market

Turkey's position in the global autogas market is particularly notable.

The country has decades of experience with LPG conversion technology, a large number of conversion workshops, and a widespread network of autogas stations. These factors make LPG relatively easy for vehicle owners to access.

The price difference between gasoline and LPG has also encouraged millions of drivers to choose autogas.

Turkey's strong autogas market has therefore not been created solely through direct government subsidies for purchasing LPG vehicles. Fuel prices, taxation, a developed conversion industry, widespread infrastructure, and consumer familiarity with LPG have all contributed to its success.

The Future of Autogas

The rapid growth of electric vehicles will undoubtedly change the position of LPG in the automotive industry. However, this does not mean that autogas will disappear in the near future.

There is still a huge global fleet of internal combustion engine vehicles on the road. Replacing all of these vehicles with electric cars will take many years.

As a result, LPG can continue to play an important role in making existing gasoline vehicles more economical to operate, particularly in countries where LPG infrastructure is already well established.

Around 2 percent of the world's passenger vehicle fleet uses LPG, while the share can reach around 10 percent in strong autogas markets such as Italy and South Korea.

The future of autogas will therefore depend on more than just the growth of electric vehicles. Fuel prices, taxation, conversion costs, government incentives, environmental regulations, and the structure of existing vehicle fleets will all influence how important LPG remains.

Countries such as Turkey, Poland, Italy, and South Korea demonstrate that when affordable fuel, strong infrastructure, and supportive policies come together, LPG can become a major part of the automotive fuel market.
