What Is Synthetic Motor Oil?

Synthetic motor oil is a type of engine oil formulated using highly refined or chemically engineered base oils and a carefully selected package of additives. Unlike conventional mineral oil, which is produced primarily by refining crude oil, synthetic oil is designed to provide more controlled and consistent performance under different engine operating conditions.

Modern engines operate under high temperatures, high pressures, tight clearances, and increasingly demanding emission requirements. For this reason, the quality and specifications of engine oil have become extremely important. Synthetic oils are designed to maintain their protective properties across a wide range of temperatures while reducing friction, controlling deposits, and protecting engine components from wear.

How Is Synthetic Motor Oil Made?

All motor oils consist primarily of base oil and additives. The base oil makes up most of the lubricant, while additives provide specific properties such as wear protection, oxidation resistance, cleaning ability, corrosion protection, and viscosity stability.

Synthetic motor oils use highly refined base oils and, depending on the product, chemically synthesized base stocks. These base oils can be engineered to have more predictable molecular characteristics than conventional mineral oils.

This does not mean that every synthetic oil is chemically identical. There are several different synthetic base-oil technologies, and the final performance of an engine oil depends on both the base oil and its additive package.

What Makes Synthetic Oil Different From Conventional Oil?

The main difference is the level of control over the oil's properties.

Conventional mineral oil contains a wider variety of naturally occurring hydrocarbon molecules because it is derived from crude oil through refining. Modern refining processes can produce very high-quality mineral oils, but synthetic base oils can be engineered or processed to provide more consistent characteristics.

This can give synthetic oils advantages in areas such as:

  • High-temperature stability

  • Low-temperature flow

  • Oxidation resistance

  • Deposit control

  • Viscosity stability

  • Wear protection

  • Cold-start lubrication

The actual difference depends on the specific oil. A high-quality conventional oil can outperform a poor-quality synthetic oil if the latter does not meet the requirements of the engine.

What Are the Advantages of Synthetic Motor Oil?

Better protection during cold starts

Engine wear can be particularly significant during startup because the oil has not yet reached all lubrication points.

Synthetic oils can be formulated to remain sufficiently fluid at low temperatures, allowing the oil to circulate more quickly after the engine starts.

This is particularly important in cold climates and for vehicles that frequently make short trips.

Better resistance to high temperatures

Engine oil is exposed to high temperatures around components such as pistons, turbochargers, bearings, and other heavily loaded areas.

Synthetic oils generally have strong resistance to thermal breakdown and oxidation. This allows them to maintain their protective characteristics under demanding operating conditions.

This is especially important for turbocharged engines, where the oil can be exposed to significant heat.

Better resistance to oxidation

Oil gradually reacts with oxygen when exposed to heat. This process, known as oxidation, can cause the oil to deteriorate and contribute to sludge and deposits.

Synthetic formulations can provide strong oxidation resistance, helping the oil maintain its properties for longer periods.

Stable viscosity

Engine oil must be fluid enough to circulate when cold but sufficiently thick to maintain an effective lubricating film when the engine is hot.

Synthetic oils can be formulated to provide good viscosity stability across a wide temperature range.

This is one reason modern engines commonly use low-viscosity synthetic oils such as 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 5W-40.

Better deposit control

A good synthetic engine oil, combined with the correct additive package, can help control sludge, varnish, and other deposits inside the engine.

Keeping the oil clean is particularly important in modern engines with turbochargers, variable valve timing systems, direct injection, and other technologies that place additional demands on the lubricant.

Does Synthetic Oil Improve Fuel Economy?

It can contribute to improved fuel efficiency, but the effect should not be exaggerated.

Many modern synthetic oils are available in lower viscosity grades that reduce internal friction. Lower friction means the engine does not have to spend as much energy moving the oil and overcoming internal resistance.

However, fuel economy depends on many other factors, including engine design, driving conditions, tire pressure, vehicle weight, temperature, transmission efficiency, and driving style.

Using a synthetic oil does not automatically produce a dramatic reduction in fuel consumption.

Is Synthetic Oil Better for Turbocharged Engines?

Synthetic oil can be particularly beneficial in turbocharged engines.

A turbocharger operates at extremely high rotational speeds and temperatures. Its bearings rely on engine oil for lubrication and cooling.

When the engine is working hard, the oil around the turbocharger can experience severe thermal stress. A properly formulated synthetic oil can provide strong resistance to oxidation and thermal degradation under these conditions.

However, the most important point is not simply choosing an oil labeled “synthetic.” The oil must meet the exact viscosity and manufacturer specifications required by the engine.

Is Synthetic Oil Suitable for High-Mileage Engines?

Yes, synthetic oil can be used in many high-mileage engines.

There is a common belief that synthetic oil should not be used in an older engine because it will cause leaks. This is an oversimplification.

Synthetic oil does not normally create a mechanical leak in a healthy engine. If an older engine has worn seals or gaskets, changing the oil may reveal an existing problem or make an existing leak more noticeable, but the oil itself is not necessarily the root cause.

For engines with significant mileage, the correct viscosity and manufacturer specification remain more important than simply choosing synthetic or mineral oil.

Does Synthetic Oil Last Longer?

Synthetic oil can resist oxidation, thermal breakdown, and viscosity changes better than many conventional oils. However, this does not mean that you should automatically extend the oil-change interval.

The correct oil-change interval is determined by the vehicle manufacturer and depends on factors such as engine design, oil specification, driving conditions, mileage, and time.

Frequent short trips, heavy traffic, towing, high temperatures, dusty environments, and repeated cold starts can place additional stress on engine oil.

Even if synthetic oil is being used, it should be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule.

What Do 0W-20, 5W-30 and 5W-40 Mean?

The numbers on engine oil indicate its viscosity classification according to SAE standards.

For example, in 5W-30:

  • 5W describes the oil's low-temperature viscosity characteristics.

  • 30 represents its viscosity classification at operating temperature.

A lower number before the “W” generally indicates better low-temperature flow characteristics.

However, a lower viscosity is not automatically better for every engine. If an engine is designed for 5W-30, switching to 0W-20 simply because it is a newer or more advanced oil may be inappropriate.

The viscosity specified by the vehicle manufacturer should always be followed.

Is Fully Synthetic Oil the Same as Synthetic Blend?

No.

Fully synthetic oil is formulated around synthetic base-oil technology and is designed to meet specific performance requirements.

Synthetic blend oil, sometimes called semi-synthetic oil, combines synthetic base oils with conventional mineral base oils.

Synthetic blends can provide a balance between cost and performance, while full synthetic oils generally offer greater performance potential.

However, the terms used on oil containers can vary by market and manufacturer, so the specifications printed on the product are often more important than the word “synthetic” itself.

What Are the Disadvantages of Synthetic Motor Oil?

Synthetic oil has several advantages, but there are also some considerations.

The first is price. High-quality synthetic oils are generally more expensive than conventional mineral oils.

Another consideration is that synthetic oil does not compensate for an incorrect specification. A very expensive synthetic oil with the wrong viscosity or approval can be a worse choice than a less expensive oil that exactly meets the vehicle manufacturer's requirements.

It is also unnecessary to choose an oil based solely on marketing claims such as “racing,” “premium,” or “fully synthetic.” The technical specifications and approvals are much more important.

How Do You Choose the Right Synthetic Oil?

The best synthetic motor oil is not necessarily the most expensive one. It is the oil that meets the requirements of your particular engine.

Before purchasing oil, check:

  • Recommended viscosity

  • Manufacturer approval

  • API specification

  • ACEA specification where applicable

  • Required emissions-system compatibility

  • Turbocharger and particulate-filter requirements

  • Recommended oil-change interval

For example, a modern diesel engine equipped with a diesel particulate filter may require a specific low-SAPS oil. Using an oil without the required specification could cause problems even if the oil is fully synthetic.

Can You Mix Synthetic and Mineral Oil?

In an emergency, many engine oils can be mixed without immediately causing catastrophic problems, provided they are suitable for the engine. However, mixing different oils is not something that should be done routinely without considering their specifications.

If you need to top up the oil level, using an oil that meets the manufacturer's required viscosity and specification is much more important than simply choosing synthetic or mineral oil.

When performing a complete oil change, using the correct oil consistently is the better approach.

Is Synthetic Motor Oil Worth Using?

For many modern engines, synthetic motor oil is an excellent choice and is often specifically required by the manufacturer.

Its resistance to high temperatures, good low-temperature performance, oxidation resistance, viscosity stability, and ability to protect modern engine components make it particularly suitable for today's engines.

But there is one rule that should always come first: follow the vehicle manufacturer's oil specification.

The words “fully synthetic” on the bottle are not enough to determine whether an oil is suitable. The correct viscosity, API or ACEA classification, manufacturer approval, and engine requirements should all be checked before the oil is poured into the engine.
